Jerome Ringo

Environmental speaker Jerome Ringo is one of the most influential conservationists in the United States today, and an outspoken supporter of increasing diversity in the conservation movement. The president of the Apollo Alliance, a coalition of diverse leaders fighting to free America from foreign energy dependence, he is a champion of environmental justice, an
advocate for clean energy, and a strong proponent of green business. As the leader of the new green power movement, Ringo has caught the attention of economists, conservationists, labor, and even President Barack Obama. Apollo’s ten year, five million green jobs plan is positioned to act as a catalyst for economic stimulus.

L. Hunter Lovins is president and founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions, a nonprofit organization in Colorado. An internationally recognized leader in helping companies and communities profit from more sustainable practices, Lovins has co-authored 12 books, including Natural Capitalism (1999), the 2006 Climate Protection Manual for Cities,
and the pending 2009 Climate Protection Manual for Businesses. Her areas of expertise include globalization, land management, energy, water, and green and community economic development. She is also a founding Professor of Sustainable Business at Presidio School of Management and was named Time Magazine’s 2000 Hero for the Planet.

Dana Bourland

As Vice President of Green Initiatives, Dana Bourland leads environmental strategy for Enterprise Community Partners. Dana directs all aspects of Enterprise’s national award-winning Green Communities program—from strategic planning and program development to evaluation and public policy advocacy, including the second phase of this program to specifically address retrofits of existing buildings and the comprehensive provision of community based green services. A returned Peace Corps volunteer, Dana holds a Master of Planning Degree from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota and is a graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design’s Program in Real Estate. She is a certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), a LEED Accredited Professional, and serves on a number of national housing boards. Dana was recently named one of Fast Company Magazine’s Most Influential Women Activists in Technology.

Michael Anschel
Partner, Verified Green, Inc.
Michael Anschel, co-owner of Verified Green, Inc., a consulting firm for residential building, is a nationally recognized expert on Green remodeling, design, and construction practices. He is the founder and principal of Otogawa – Anschel Design Build, L.L.C., which recently was awarded the first Sustainable Remodeling Award and the first National Green Remodeling Award. He writes for Hanley Wood and LivGreen magazines, speaks at various national and regional conferences, and is the Research and Development Director for MN GreenStar.

Todd Baumann
Project Manager, Common Ground Construction
Todd Baumann has coordinated the adoption of green construction techniques in the field. Todd has developed the work scopes for foreclosed, condemned, and general acquisition rehabs as well as coordinated energy detailing, lead mitigation, and troubleshooting. He has 12 years of construction and maintenance management experience.

Mark Brengman, PE, LEED AP
President, Steen Engineering

Steen Engineering’s consulting work has earned the recognition of national and state engineering associations. With more than 15 years of experience, Mark works closely with his clients ensuring their needs are met with creative engineering solutions. He is a LEED® Accredited Professional who has completed several LEED certified projects. He diligently attempts to apply LEED principles to all of his projects including solar and geothermal technologies.

Krista Egger
Affordable Housing Program Manager, Advanced Energy

As Affordable Housing Program Manager, Krista Egger manages the operations of the single family affordable housing program, and she is responsible for managing the home rating process for all SystemVision homes. Krista is one of Advanced Energy’s key trainers, not only for the SystemVision program but for Advanced Energy’s Principles of Building Science series. Krista attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH, and graduated with a BA in art history. Her focus was on architectural history.

Tim Eian
Architect and Founder, TE Studio, Ltd.
Tim Eian was born and raised in Germany, and graduated from the architecture school at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) as an engineer. Tim is an associate member of the AIA, and a certified Passive House consultant. In 2008 he founded TE Studio – a building design firm dedicated to beautiful, resource-efficient buildings. His company specializes in extremely energy efficient new construction and deep energy reduction retrofit projects.

Dan Frank
Program Manager for Community Development, Initiative Foundation

Dan Frank is responsible for coordinating the Healthy Communities Partnership program, community leadership training, internal training and grants review. Dan is very active with his local community and was selected as the Pequot Lakes Citizen of the Year in 2000.

Sarah Hannigan
Housing Development Director, Northern Communities Land Trust

Sarah Hannigan oversees Northern Communities’ new construction and acquisition-rehab activities, including the completion of 25 scattered site Minnesota Green Communities homes and the redevelopment of 15 foreclosed properties. Sarah has 14 years of experience in business management, sustainable policy research, and community-based housing development.

Patrick Huelman
Associate Professor, University of Minnesota, Cold Climate Housing Program
Pat Huelman is the lead faculty for the Residential Building Science and Technology undergraduate degree and a principal investigator on several research projects, including the Cloquet Residential Research Facility for hygrothermal testing. Pat is extremely active in professional education for the home building industry and is recognized for his “systems approach.” His areas of expertise include: energy efficient design, long-term durability, building systems, foundations, moisture control, ventilation strategies, and indoor air quality.

Don Hynek
Quality Assurance Coordinator, Division of Energy Services

Don Hynek is a field inspector for weatherization agencies in Wisconsin. Don has been an active participant in energy efficiency and multifamily programs for a decade as a Track Leader for five Affordable Comfort conferences, in the three-year effort by the Multifamily National Working Group to design an Energy Star program for apartments and condos, and in the Department of Energy’s Multifamily Energy conferences in 2003, 2006, and 2008. Don is also active in building performance research. At present, he may well be the country's most experienced practitioner in the exceptionally obscure field of blower door testing in large apartment buildings.

Richard Klimala
Owner, BCB Construction

Richard Klimala has built a substantial number of single family homes throughout the Twin Cities in the past 11 years. As an Energy Star builder, BCB Construction was selected to construct the American Lung Association National Demonstration Housing in the City of Richfield in 2004. The company is also the recipient of the St. Paul Heritage Preservation Commission and St. Paul Chapter of the AIA Award of Recognition for Excellence in Construction of Affordable Housing.

Steve Klossner
President and Owner, Advanced Certified Thermography
Stephen R. Klossner has over 25 years of experience in the indoor air quality and home diagnostics field. Steve participates in ongoing indoor air quality research and has developed residential and commercial performance standards on local and national levels. He is co-author of the American Lung Association’s Health House performance standards and building criteria that are being implemented in Health House sites nationally.

Allyssa A. Kuseske, PE, LEED AP
Mechanical Engineer, Questions & Solutions Engineering, Inc.
Allyssa Kuseske has ten years of engineering and project management experience. Her work has included design of building HVAC systems and central utility infrastructure systems for buildings and industrial processes. Allyssa is an experienced commissioning professional, having provided project management, design review, functional test procedure development, and field testing for a variety of mechanical systems. She has also facilitated LEED processes for several project teams, including program management, credit documentation and review, and submittal review assistance.

Russ Landry, PE, LEEP AP
Mechanical Engineer, Center for Energy and Environment
Russ Landry is a mechanical engineer who has developed practical knowledge of multifamily building energy performance issues in his 20 years of work at the Center for Energy and Environment. This work includes nationally published field research, rehab planning, energy analysis, recommissioning, commissioning, and green design team involvement. Through CenterPoint Energy's Multifamily Design Assistance program and other work, he has been involved in a number of new and rehab projects meeting sustainable guidelines.

Jorge Lopez
Senior Project Manager, Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership

Jorge Lopez has been with SWMHP since 2004 and has a Bachelor of Science Degree – Business Administration, Cum Laude. Lopez has been involved with construction since 1979. As the Senior Project Manager at SWMHP, Lopez is responsible for managing all aspects of new construction, new developments, project management, construction rehabilitation, and field inspections. Lopez currently holds licenses for Building Official Limited, Lead (pb) Risk Assessor, and Lead (pd) Supervisor, Asbestos Inspector. In addition, Mr. Lopez is pursuing his LEED AP certification.

Matthew S. Malinosky, EIT, LEED AP

Matthew Malinosky has five years of experience in executing and managing commissioning, recommissioning, and LEED registered projects. Gail Merriam
Real Estate Development Manager, Neighborhood Development Alliance

Gail Merriam has been NeDA's Real Estate Development Manager for over ten years. She is responsible for the development of new construction homes and has overseen several whole house rehabilitation projects. The most recent project increased its energy efficiently by 49 percent, improving from a two star to a four star Home Energy Rating. Gail also manages NeDA's home-owner home rehab programs.

Paul Morin
Technical Sales Specialist, The Energy Conservatory

Paul Morin’s previous work as a Senior Building Analyst with the Center for Energy and Environment includes leading energy-efficiency and weatherization programs and serving as a technical coordinator for the MAC Sound Insulation Program. Paul has three decades of field experience in enhancing the energy efficiency, durability, and indoor air quality of homes in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

Bruce Nelson
Senior Engineer, Minnesota Department of Commerce, Office of Energy Security

Bruce Nelson manages projects to improve energy performance in new and existing buildings consistent with maintaining healthy environments and building durability. From 1981 to 2000 he was responsible for updating the Minnesota Energy Code. Bruce has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota and is a registered professional mechanical engineer in Minnesota.

Cindy Ojczyk (“o-check”) is the co-owner of Verified Green, Inc., a consulting and training firm that helps building-related companies to incorporate green practices. She is also owner of Simply Green Design, an interior design firm specializing in design for remodeling, interior updates, and new construction. As a key member of the Green Remodeling Group, Cindy helped create the Minnesota GreenStar remodeling program and served as the consultant to the first LEED-Silver home built in Minnesota.

Patrick O’Malley

Pat O'Malley’s areas of expertise include research, diagnostics, testing, data monitoring, technical assistance, consultation, and training. Pat was project and technical manager for the Minnesota Department of Commerce energy code study Evaluating Minnesota Homes. As an outside contractor Pat managed the Xcel Energy Premier Homes Program in Minnesota from 1996 to 2003. At the local level, Pat works with Building Science Corporation in support of the Department of Energy’s Building America Program.

Jodi Slick
Executive Director, Common Ground Construction

Common Ground Construction, a social enterprise dedicated to affordable green construction, is the general contractor for the Northern Communities Land Trust and has completed 25 Minnesota Green Communities new construction homes, remodels, and deconstruction/reconstructions in the past two years. Jodi assisted in the development of a sustainability index and an advanced green rehab plan to include solar on ten land trust units. She is currently coordinating a community green jobs planning process. Jodi has presented at several conferences, most recently the National Land Trust Academy in Boston, MA.

Jimmy Sparks
Residential Energy Program Manager, Neighborhood Energy Connection
Jimmie Sparks has decades of experience making houses more efficient, durable, and healthy. He has directed weatherization efforts at Neighborhood Energy Connection and currently serves as the Xcel Energy Home Energy Audit project manager, overseeing the program in three states. Jimmy provides auditor training, mentoring, quality control and has provided LEED for Homes certification testing. He has been active in professional organizations, carries a variety of energy certifications, and is a respected presenter and trainer at state and regional conferences.

Bruce Watson
Architect, Minnesota Housing
Bruce Watson is a licensed architect, serving Minnesota Housing’s Multifamily Division since 1990. Bruce provides architectural design, construction administration, real estate analysis, and other construction loan administration services in support of Minnesota Housing’s multifamily housing financing operations. Before joining Minnesota Housing, Bruce practiced as a consulting architect and worked in commercial and industrial real estate development, the construction trades, and real estate property maintenance.

William Weber
Senior Research Fellow, University of Minnesota, Center for Sustainable Building Research

William Weber's research focuses on the integration of sustainability and architecture through applied research, exploring aesthetic, economic, and environmental goals. He is a co-primary investigator and project manager of the McKnight Foundation- funded Minnesota Sustainable Housing Initiative, a knowledge base of tools and case studies to advance sustainability in affordable housing.
